Take Steps to Get Off the Hamster Wheel
In today’s modern western society people are constantly on the go. Doing this and doing that --moving from one task to another. Ever watch a hamster running on a wheel? It starts out running at a nice clip, and then speeds up.
Eventually the hamster is running so hard and fast that it tires out and stops to catch its breath. Quickly it jumps back on again and starts running again trying hard to get to where it thinks the wheel will take it. Round and round it goes never getting beyond the original starting point.
Many of us tend to be a bit like the hamster -- going, going, going. Work occupies our time during the week and we spend the weekend trying to catch up on things we couldn’t do during the week. Moments where we are not physically moving or going someplace are consumed with electronic gadgets and equipment that are designed to save time and make our life simpler yet have the tendency to do just the opposite if we let them.
Cell phones, I pads, televisions, computers, -- the list is long and all are wonderful tools. However these tools can be draining and counterproductive when they keep us in a state of being constantly occupied. For instance precious down times that we used to have to ourselves are becoming increasingly encroached upon.
A perfect example would be something simple as using the bathroom. Many of us have witnessed individuals talking or texting while in a bathroom stall. What was once considered a private time out has now become a shared moment when the cell phone rings. People are compelled to answer the phone when it rings, regardless of what they are doing.
Where are we headed on this fast track of go, go, go and do, do, do? The answer is nowhere. We are going nowhere fast.
Treat Yourself to Frequent Downtime
If you take a moment to get off the hamster wheel and look around you’ll see that your life really has not changed. The life you wanted to have a year ago or five years ago still has not manifested. Despite the day to day grind everything is pretty much the same.
You owe it to yourself to get off the wheel as often possible. Refocus. Allow yourself moments of real down time and reflection. Turn off the cell, turn off the computer, turn off the gadgets and just chill. Breath, relax, listen. Use these tranquil moments to get a sense of who you are and to plant seeds of what you would really like to happen in your life.
Treat yourself to private moments of quiet reflection regularly. It’s during the quiet moments that you’ll receive creative insight and inspiration to point you in the right direction.
THE TAKE AWAY?
Feeling stuck in a cycle is about being in a loop where your actions don’t feel like they lead to meaningful results. Sometimes the issue isn’t lack of effort—it’s energy leaks such as too much time on social media or electronics; lack of sleep or not taking time to focus on what is important to you.
Introspection and self-reflection when it is not self-criticism can lead to clarity.
Guess what, if you do this often enough you could look up and notice that where you are going is precisely where you wanted to be!
